Virtual Reality
I have been watching old episodes of Star Trek on TV Land lately. It is almost comical some of the "special effects." It is amazing how so much is changed since those early days of videography. The panels look so fake, lights blinking, video screens with still images. For those of us who enjoy the Sci-Fi stuff, it truly is laughable.
Yet, in the day, it was so cool. Just the thought of flying through space was the most awesome thing to me as a young boy. I would dream of the day I too would be able to "boldly go where no man has gone before."
Of course the reality it, I will never go there. No one will. It was all just a show. Captain Kirk is really just William Shatner. Mr. Spock is really Leonard Nimoy. It's all just virtual reality.
It's the same way with what Satan has done with church and the things of church or religion. We have been in a virtual reality of sorts. We have thought that for years we have had all the right answers when the reality is, we don't even know the proper questions. We claim truth and teach inconsistencies.
I know this sounds harsh, yet I believe that we must get honest with ourselves and move past "church" and onto real ministry in the lives of the people in our communities. This will require that we get into the lives of people to the point that it costs. That's scary to many of us.
Sunday I will be talking about our Lord and His entrance into this world in a messy way. He then lived amongst and worked with messy people. He finally died one of the messiest deaths ever known to man.
He is our example. We need to get out of our ivory towers, glorious cathedrals, and our virtual "religions" an begin to serve people like Jesus did. Yes, it will be messy and will cost, but the ultimate reality of a life with our Father depends upon it.
