The Mighty Spider

Have you ever seen the power of spiders? They are amazing little creatures. Yesterday, I was driving along and had to stop for a red light. When I stopped, a little spider, not much bigger than a pencil point, crawled out onto my windshield.

My mind started working. I thought, "When I take off, that little guy is going to fly--and in a hurry!" As you might guess, that did not happen. 25, 35, 45, and even 50 miles per hour, and he hung on for life. He balled up and would not let go. I would stop at the next light, he would crawl until I took off and then ball up and hang on again. It was amazing!

I was going to blog about the lessons I could have possibly learned from this little spider. I even thought about some names for him. But I would like to know your thoughts first. What would you call such a creature? How would you apply my story to life? Looking forward to hearing from you!

  • He's a very determined little guy! Or girl! I think this teaches us a lot about life. Even though we go through storms and troubles and tough times, if we just hang on with all we have to our Savior (in this case it was your windshield) we will come out of our experiences a much stronger person inside and out on the other side.

  • I’ll take a negative spin. I would say that spider reminds me of a small, very small part of our church. In this post-modern world we find ourselves in, we have made some very intentional steps towards what we hope is positive change at our church. The result so far has been a growth in the number of singles and families in the 20 to 30 age bracket and an influx of babies and young kids.

For this small group it must seem that they are the spider hanging on to their (windshields) antiquated views of how “church” looks and is done. And despite our best efforts to get them off “their windshields” so to speak, they continue like your spider to ball up and hang on to that view.

How was that? Thanks for giving me the space to air that out. May God continue to bless you and the good folks at Creekside.

  • I'd be interested in knowing where you were doing 50 to try to loose the spider. My guess would be along Avalon Ave. (at 5 over the posted limit like everyone else).
